If it seems like there’s and increasing number of new playgrounds popping up around Long Beach, you’re right. This newly-opened playground at Los Cerritos Park in Bixby Knolls is the second completed of six Measure A-funded playground upgrade. In 2016, Long Beach voters passed Measure A, which dedicated a small sales tax increase to fund maintenance and enhancement of public safety services and invest in City infrastructure.
Okay, that sounds boring. But it’s important, especially when people bemoan the conditions of their playground. You can check the list of what’s next for Measure A on the city’s website.
On to the fun stuff, this playground is definitely one of our faves in Long Beach now. The whole space was designed with a tree house theme, and it’s huge. It’s the first playground in Long Beach to have a zipline as well as hillside slides. We love the flying saucer swing and the standing merry-go-round too.
The kids love all the nooks and crannies for games of hide and seek, though those same nooks and crannies can quickly become stressful for those with wandering toddlers.
We especially love the shade sails over the swings, and all the shade provided by the trees. The abundance of shade definitely makes those summer days at the park much easier. The two play structures have multiple slides and lots of treehouse-themed surprises (see if you can find any hidden bears while you’re there).
There’s isn’t a gated area, but we’d still say this is a toddler-friendly park because of the some sand spaces, baby swings, and a smaller play structure.
“These two new play structures have added to the park’s appeal for residents who also enjoy the tennis courts, picnic areas and our summer Municipal Band concerts,” said Councilmember Roberto Uranga in a statement. “The playground’s treehouse theme blends well with this wooded park and the character of our community.”
New playgrounds at Drake, Jenni Rivera, Veterans and Whaley Parks are slated to open later in 2018.
